Foundations of Fragrance Composition

A practical course for people who want to understand and create perfumes.

A three-day course that introduces you to the world of perfumery in a clear, logical, and hands-on way. We work with natural and modern fragrance materials, and you will create three personal perfumes, leaving the course understanding not just how, but why they work.

Course Program

The course takes place over three consecutive Saturdays, each session lasting 3 hours with a 30-minute break.

Saturday 1 – History and Natural Perfumery

We begin with a brief introduction to the world of scents and the evolution of perfumery – from ritual and function to contemporary art. We cover the basics of natural perfumery and the materials used today:

• essential oils, absolutes, and CO₂ extracts

• how fragrance structures are built

• top, middle, and base notes

In the practical part, each participant creates their first perfume – a completely natural, oil-based composition.

Saturday 2 – How Perfume is Made in Reality

The second session focuses on modern perfumery and the real process of creating a fragrance. Topics include:

• synthetic fragrance molecules and why they are used

• difference between oil-based and alcohol-based perfumes

• concentrations, longevity, and scent development

In the practical part, participants work with natural and synthetic materials to create a second perfume – a blended, alcohol-based composition.

Saturday 3 – Thinking Like a Perfumer

The final session brings everything together and turns knowledge into skill. The focus is on how a fragrance develops over time and on skin:

• scent development and why first impressions can be misleading

• common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them

• why the same perfume smells different on different people

After the break, participants finalize their signature perfume, with guidance on how to recreate and further develop it independently.

Each participant receives a starter kit to continue working after the course:

• empty 10 ml roll-on (for oil-based perfume)

• 2 empty 10 ml spray bottles (for alcohol-based perfume)

• set of oils

• blotters for testing

• basic lab tools

• worksheets for:

• fragrance pyramid

• recording formulas

• notes and adjustments

 Finished Perfumes

During the course, each participant creates and takes home:

• 1 natural perfume (oil-based)

• 1 blended perfume (alcohol-based)

• 1 final signature perfume
